Leap.

Today, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite quotes.

I thought of this quote often (especially in the past 4 or so weeks) when I was faced with an especially difficult decision...do I accept a new teaching position at a new school or stay where I was at?

I realized that no matter what decision I made, it was going to be the right one because I was going to make that decision with my heart.

I chose to leave the school I am at.

Even though I have had my rough moments (like this one and this one), I think back to times like this one where my life changed.

I changed.

For the better.

I want to leave you all today with an update about a student that was in a difficult place:

(Do me a favor, go here first and read this)

It has been over four months since the incident occurred.

I am so happy to report that this child is in SUCH A BETTER PLACE.

He earned his first "A" on a test in my class! MY CLASS!!! And he worked his little butt off for that "A".

My heart was so full and my eyes burned at the threat of tears when I put that grade on his paper....I was and am SO PROUD of him.

He has been accepted to a very prestigious magnet high school.

This child is going to be somebody.

This child will change the world. I know he will!!!!!!!!

It's always great to hear stories like this. My mom's a teacher and my dad was a principal for over 30 years before he retired so I know the trials and tribulations of being in education. It truly takes a special person to be a good and effective teacher to make an impact in students lives. It's obvious you're one of them!! Thanks for sharing! :)

As a fellow teacher, I can totally relate. I student taught in a very low-income school and after visiting yesterday, I was so inspired by the growth that my students have made over the course of the year. Isn't it amazing to impact the lives of children?

And now, I also know how wonderful it can be too! As for your student, I am so proud of him and YOU! He couldn't have done it without you, I'm sure!

This makes me soooo happy!!! Thank you for caring so much for these kids. I cant imagine how hard it would be to teach at that type of school, you are a hero and are changing those kids lives in more ways than you can see right now.

Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad he's doing better and you are too! I'm a first year teacher, and it's been eye-opening to see the things those kids have to deal with everyday. Good thing you didn't give up on him-he's going places!

Congrats on the new position. It'll be a great change, I'm sure.

How exciting for you and your student! The happy ending's are so few and far between. I subbed today for 7th grade Social Studies, I actually had students tell me that they learned more today than all year with current teacher. Their daily assignment's are to read and do worksheets on computer. I followed up, the student was correct. SMH

Thank you being one that cares!

This is so amazing Michelle. I have worked at a children's summer camp for the past six years and most of our campers are sponsored, at-risk, low-income youth. The one week they spend with us in summer keeps them going all year long and they can't wait to get back. To have that impact on a child is so amazing and rewarding and makes all stress, back-talk and tough attitudes worth it. They just don't know any different. Your kids are lucky to have a teacher like you :)

Thanks for sharing about your student! Although we can all commiserate about the bad/wild/ridiculous things, we can also all celebrate the good/amazing/inspiration things. I'm sure he'll remember you as someone who cared about him and pushed him to be his best!
